Phone Fell in Water? What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

Power off, don't charge, skip the rice. A step-by-step rescue plan that actually protects the motherboard.

Water itself rarely kills a phone. Corrosion and short circuits while powered on do. What you do in the first 30 minutes decides the repair bill.

Do this immediately

  1. Take it out and switch it off. Do not test whether it still works.
  2. Remove the case, SIM tray and memory card.
  3. Wipe it dry and gently shake out water from the ports, ports facing down.
  4. Do not charge it, even if it looks fine. Charging a wet board causes most of the damage.

Avoid these myths

  • Rice: it does not pull water out of the inside. It only adds starch dust to the ports.
  • Hair dryer: heat can warp adhesive and push water deeper.
  • Freezer or sunlight: condensation and heat both hurt the battery.

Salt water, tea and juice are worse

Sugary and salty liquids leave conductive residue that keeps corroding even after the phone dries. For these, an ultrasonic clean within 24-48 hours gives the best chance.

What we do in the lab

  • Open the device and disconnect the battery
  • Clean the board in an ultrasonic bath with isopropyl alcohol
  • Treat corrosion under a microscope and replace damaged ICs if needed
  • Test charging, display, audio and network before return

"Water resistant" is not waterproof

IP68 seals weaken with age, drops and earlier repairs. After any screen or back-glass repair, we re-apply water seals, but no repair shop can guarantee factory-level resistance.
